ADIRE ALABELA BATIK
July 18/19
Service Description
Enter the Indigo Dye Village and immerse yourself in the refined artistry of Adire Alabela, a Yoruba wax-resist indigo tradition that balances precision, pattern, and expressive design. The Adire Alabela Batik Workshop at Ajanku Art Studio invites participants into a dynamic, hands-on textile experience where wax becomes a drawing tool and indigo becomes the agent of transformation. Across West Africa and throughout the African Diaspora, indigo cloth has carried identity, symbolism, and innovation. In this workshop, participants engage that lineage through the controlled yet creative process of wax resist. Workshop Experience Participants begin by designing their textile surface—considering repetition, symmetry, visual rhythm, and wearable composition. As fabrics enter the indigo vat, participants witness the moment of oxidation—cloth emerging green before deepening into luminous blue. Multiple dye immersions enhance contrast and richness, revealing the clarity of wax-resist patterns. Under guided instruction, participants will: Learn the foundations of Adire Alabela wax-resist technique, Apply melted wax using brushes, stamps, or traditional tools, Develop motifs, line work, and layered surface design Explore positive and negative space, Prepare textiles for immersion in a natural indigo vat. Participant Materials Participants are invited to bring 3–6 yards of 100% natural fiber fabric (light- to mid-weight) or pre-approved natural fiber garments to serve as their batik design surface. Recommended fabrics include: Cotton sheeting, Muslin, Broadcloth, Lightweight canvas, Linen, Cotton–linen blends (natural fiber dominant) Fabric Preparation Requirements: To ensure strong color saturation and crisp wax-resist definition: Fabric must be 100% natural fiber, Fabric must be pre-washed, Do not use fabric softener or starch, Fabric must be free of sizing or stain-resistant finishes Precision Meets Expression Adire Alabela is both technical and intuitive. Wax seals selected areas of cloth, allowing artists to create: Crisp linear designs, Repeating motifs, Graphic contrast, Layered storytelling through pattern. Indigo Dye Village Learning Approach This workshop reflects the Indigo Dye Village philosophy of: Learning through hands-on practice, Cultural grounding and historical respect, Observation of material transformation, Community-centered studio engagement.
