May 3rd - Adire Oniko Tie and Dye Resist
Oniko comes from “kó”, meaning to tie or gather. This method involves tying sections of the fabric tightly with raffia, twine, or bands to prevent those parts from absorbing dye. Common motifs are made by tying stones, seeds, or pebbles into the fabric or by folding, pleating, and binding the cloth. After dyeing (traditionally with indigo from Elu plants), the bound areas remain lighter or white when untied, forming distinctive patterns.
May 10th - Adire Alabere Stitch Dye Resist
Alabere refers to stitching. Patterns are created by stitching designs into the fabric with a needle and raffia thread, pulling the stitches tight to create gathers before dyeing. After dyeing and removing the threads, intricate linear patterns emerge, often more detailed and controlled than tie-dye.
May 24th - Adire Batik Wax Dye Resist
Batik is known for its detailed and often symmetrical designs. The use of wax and stencils allows for fine lines and intricate patterns, making batik fabrics stand out with their precision. Nigerian batik often incorporates wax stamps with elaborate folkloric motifs.
